Collections Specialist
TruEnergy Federal Credit Union, a $126+ million financial institution in Springfield, Virginia, is seeking a seasoned Collections Specialist to join our team. This role is critical to managing and reducing delinquency across multiple account types while maintaining a member-focused, solution-driven approach.
The ideal candidate will have at least 5 years of collections experience in a credit union or banking environment, with a strong working knowledge of Chapter 7 & 13 bankruptcy, repossessions, and compliance with TCPA, FDCPA, FCRA, and UCC laws. Familiarity with FISERV systems, skip tracing tools, and modern collection technology is essential.
We’re looking for a proactive professional who can balance risk management with compassionate member support, handle complex situations with professionalism, and work closely with leadership to develop effective collection strategies.
Responsibilities:
- Communicate with members via telephone and written correspondence for delinquent loans/accounts on a daily basis
- Manage delinquent auto, consumer, credit card, and negative share accounts, making early contact to understand member hardship, and negotiate resolutions or repayment plans.
- Process Chapter 7 & 13 bankruptcy accounts, track status updates, enforce lien recovery post-discharge when allowed, and file proofs of claim when required.
- Compliance with state and federal collection regulations, including the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA).
- Apply UCC guidelines appropriately for secured loans—filing and enforcing UCC‑1 liens when applicable.
- Use collection platforms to document communication, track activity.
- Leverage skip tracing tools and collection technology to locate members and resolve accounts efficiently.
- Identify potential legal or repo actions, coordinate with external vendors and attorneys, and manage repossession processes when needed.
- Monitor and report delinquency trends to leadership
- Conduct financial counseling and offer loss mitigation solutions empathetically, balancing member support and risk management.
- Adhere to internal policies, BSA/AML/OFAC, and ethical collection standards.
- Generate and manage collection-related reports and dashboards for departmental reviews.
Requirements:
- Minimum 5 years of collections experience in a credit union or bank setting.
- Knowledge of Chapter 7 & 13 bankruptcy, TCPA, FDCPA, FCRA, UCC, and UDAAP regulations.
- Proficient in handling credit reporting disputes through E-Oscar
- Experience with call recording systems, dialer technology, and skip tracing tools.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, attention to detail, and ethical decision-making.
- Ability to handle contentious situations calmly and professionally.
- Knowledge of repossession practices and regulations
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required
- Strong verbal phone skills, works well without supervision, and a quick learner.
- PC proficient including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power point
- Ability to function in a financial institution branch environment and utilize standard office equipment including but not limited to: CRT, PC, fax, copier, telephone, postage machine, etc.
